19.05.2003 - In 2001, a company in Germany ordered a centrifugal compressor from MAN Turbo for a methyl chloride plant for the manufacture of silicon. The scope of the order included gear units and oil systems. The plant was commissioned successfully in 2002.

Chlorine is a basic raw material in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. It is used for cleaning and disinfection as well as in an antiseptic capacity. The most widespread application of chlorine is in the manufacture of plastics, where one of the most familiar products is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In chlorine processing, compressors are needed primarily for the preparation of industrial raw materials. Owing to the nature of the product, and also to the increase in pressure, the machines had to meet special criteria.

MAN Turbo has been using horizontally split compressors for chlorine processes in the chemical industry worldwide since 1968. The customer commissioned its first two compressors for chlorine gas back in 1973. These two compressors were successfully revamped in 2001, achieving a capacity increase of 37 % with the old casing and the new internals. The customer acquired its fifth methyl chloride system of this type from MAN Turbo in 2001.
